Republicans face growing backlash for preemptively obstructing Pres. Obama’s nominee

San Francisco –– CREDO Action, a social change network of more than 3.9 million activists, is in the early stages of a sustained campaign to pressure Senate Republicans not to obstruct President Obama’s nominee to replace Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.

Republicans’ obstruction is nothing more than a hypocritical, radical, anti-democratic power grab,” said CREDO Deputy Political Director Murshed Zaheed, adding, “the American people aren’t buying it.

CREDO’s campaign started less than 24 hours after Republicans’ immediate promises of obstruction in response to news of Justice Scalia’s death, with an online petition that has already been signed by more than 165,000 people. The campaign escalated this morning, with activists making phone calls to the in-district and Washington offices of nine swing state Republican Senators urging them to “stop trying to sabotage our democracy with partisan threats to block President Obama Supreme Court nominee.”

President Obama has the constitutional power under Article II to nominate a new Supreme Court justice with the advice and consent of the Senate,” said CREDO Senior Campaign Manager Heidi Hess. “Preemptively challenging that power and promising to undermine it is an unprecedented abdication of constitutional responsibility.

Here are some early details on what CREDO activists are doing to fight back against Republican obstruction:

165,000+ PETITION SENATE REPUBLICANS NOT TO OBSTRUCT OBAMA NOMINEE: In the past 72 hours alone, more than 165,000 activists have signed a CREDO petition demanding that Senate Republicans “hold fair hearings and an up-or-down vote on President Obama’s nominee.” VIEW THE PETITION:

GRASSROOTS CALL CAMPAIGN TARGETS KEY SWING STATE SENATE REPUBLICANS: This morning, CREDO activists started using a sophisticated call tool that connects them directly with the offices of key swing state Senate Republicans. In the coming weeks, activists will make thousands of phone calls to the in-district and Washington, DC offices of Senators Mark Kirk (IL), Kelly Ayotte (NH), Ron Johnson (WI), Rob Portman (OH), Pat Toomey (PA), Lisa Murkowski (AK), John McCain (AZ), Roy Blunt (MO) and Susan Collins (ME).
